2nd Annual Digital Access Day

May 28, 2019

We believe the internet helps address serious social and economic needs. But too often, the digital divide mirrors existing inequities.

The 2nd Annual Digital Access Day is bringing together thought-leaders from NGOs, the tech sector, government, universities, and those most affected by the digital divide to talk about good work already underway, identify what else can be done, and measure progress.

How to recognize misinformation, how to report it, and the actions currently being taken or that can be taken by platforms, governments, etc. to combat it.

In a report by Cira: “Canadians Deserve a Better Internet ( https://cira.ca/betterinternet )” shows that over half of Canadians admit they’ve been taken in by a fake news item.

And if you ask Canadian internet users, they see the responsibility to stop the spread of fake news as being split between social media companies, the press, the federal government and citizens themselves.

Researchers have provided estimates that between 20-50 billion IoT devices will be connected globally by 2020. Most of these devices will have an indirect or direct implication on consumer protection, 15 percent will be owned directly by consumers. Mitigating cyber threats for consumers and the indirect threat to the organizations they work for continues to be a growing area of concern.

Technology is a tool for all people. Products and services should be designed to empower everyone.

1 Billion in the world have a disability.  Technology is a tool that should be designed to empower everyone, regardless of their ability.   Bill C-81, the Accessible Canada Act, which aims to make Canada a more accessible country, is currently before Parliament.  The Government of Canada has recently appointed a Deputy Minister whose responsibility is to make the government of Canada a more accessible workplace.

What are the challenges and opportunities for service providers and manufacturers?    How can we ensure that everyone has access to digital technology?

How does services based competition work in Canada?

3:30pm Affordability

The Government of Canada and the OECD report that the price of communications in Canada is higher than in most other modern economies. They also report that adoption by Canadians of data-intense uses is slowed by high prices. So why is this? What can be done about it? The CRTC says it wants to stick with facilities-based competition. Are there other successful models for getting prices lower? More intervention in markets? Or less? And if interventions are needed, what kind have shown themselves to be effective? How do we get affordability at the centre of our concerns for telecom policy?
