Biography
Benjamin Klass is a PhD candidate at Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communication. His dissertation work examines the evolution and adaptation of Canadian communication law, policy, and regulations alongside changes in industry structure and communication habits associated with the widespread diffusion and adoption of broadband telecommunications technologies. Mr. Klass holds a Master of Arts from the University of Manitoba and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Toronto.
Since 2019, Mr. Klass has held the position of senior research associate with the Canadian Media Concentration Research Project, an SSHRC-funded project which examines the state of Canada’s network media economy. His work with the CMCRP has involved collecting, organizing, and analyzing economic data on the telecommunications industry, including producing reports and presenting research before various policy and regulatory authorities. Prior to this, Mr. Klass held the position of research assistant with the CMCRP from 2013-2019.
Since 2015, Mr. Klass has also acted as an independent consultant and expert on telecommunications issues. His views are regularly solicited by the media, and he is frequently invited to deliver guest lectures at universities across the country.
From 2015-2018, Mr. Klass was a research associate with the First Mile Connectivity Consortium, a research and advocacy group dedicated to promoting First Nations’ communication interests before various regulatory and policy authorities.
Mr. Klass currently sits on the board of directors of the Internet Society—Canada Chapter.
