Irene Berkowitz

Biography

Irene S. Berkowitz, PhD has widely recognized expertise in media research and policy analysis; writing and speaking on media policy issues; building consensus between stakeholders; and solving hard problems to hard deadlines. Her work on modernizing Canadian media policy is exemplified by her book (Mediaucracy: Why Canada hasn’t made global TV hits and how it can). She has led ground-breaking projects for Google/YouTube and Canada Media Fund. Berkowitz has written white papers for MacDonald Laurier Institute; executive produced/hosted 2 podcast series for Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) Audience Lab (Mediaucracy, The Sessions); has been invited to speak on regulatory issues with Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC); Canada Senate Transportation and Communications Committee (TRCM); Canada House of Commons Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage (CHPC); Department of Canadian Heritage (PCH); and penned dozens of op-eds for publications including The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, Playback, and cartt.ca. Berkowitz teaches in the MA/MBA program at Ted Rogers MBA and The Creative School at TMU; and is a graduate of Cornell University (BA); University of Chicago (MA); TMU (PhD); and SingularityU Executive Program, exponential technologies. A list of Dr. Berkowitz’ publications is available here.
